Forced test detects material resistance
A new low-cost rapid test allows manufacturers of fuel-bearing components for heating systems and vehicles to test the resistance to fuels and combustibles of the used metallic materials. The test is suitable for middle distillates and mixtures of middle distillate and paraffinic hydrocarbons, each containing up to 20% fatty acid methyl ester (FAME).
New CO₂-reduced fuels in standard and materials testing
In the future, new CO2-reduced fuels can enable climate-friendly mobility parallel to electric drives. But are they compatible with the existing logistics and tank infrastructure as well as the engines and fuel systems of new and old vehicles? Do they also comply with the standards and requirements that apply today? OWI Science for Fuels is investigating these questions together with partners in the current research project "NormAKraft".
Methanol from sewage gas
The production of high-purity methanol from sewage gas as a marketable product is the objective of a current research project. To produce high-purity methanol from sewage gas, which is marketable as a product, is the goal of a current research project. V. and the OWI Science for Fuels gGmbH want project to build a demonstrator for an optimized methanol synthesis process. Operational safety of rolling bearings
Malfunctions of rolling bearings can lead to the total loss of an entire technical system or to long downtimes. Insufficient lubrication is the cause of rolling bearing failures in about 50 % of cases. In a current research project, the Competence Center Tribology Mannheim (KTM) and OWI Science for Fuels gGmbH (OWI) want to expand the knowledge about the failure mechanisms of rolling bearings with life-time lubrication. In a previous project, they were able to demonstrate that not only the thermal oxidation of the oils contained in the grease, but also the degradation of the thickeners in the grease play an important role in their failure.

Development of an industrial multi-fuel burner system
In a current research project the Gas- und Wärme-Institut Essen e.V. (GWI) and the OWI Science for Fuels gGmbH want to extend the combustion concept they have developed for the "combined burner for liquid and gaseous biogenic fuels" for the generation of industrial heat to include the use of energy sources from bio, residual and waste materials.
