Modern Fuels

Part of the OWI success story

Modern fuels for innovative technologies are a central research area that scientists at OWI have been working on since the institute was founded in 1998. When low-sulphur fuels were introduced to the space heating market in 2001, the aim was to open up the heating market to new technologies such as condensing technology for heating oil. OWI has carried out accompanying studies on the possible interactions between the new fuels and heating technology.

Since 2004, OWI has contributed to the successful market launch of FAME through several research projects together with the German Society for Petroleum and Coal Science and Technology (DGMK), the Fachagentur Nachwachsende Rohstoffe e.V. (FNR) and the Institute für Wärme und Oeltechnik e.V. (IWO). The influence of FAME as an admixture in heating oil on important quality characteristics such as storage stability was investigated in particular.
