Welcome to the Oel-Waerme-Institut

OWI provides research services investigating and developing concepts and new technologies for heat and power generation on a basis of fossil and renewable fuels. It aims at developing energy-efficient and environmentally friendly products which are marketable. At the same time, OWI cooperates closely with industrial partners and research institutes and sees itself as an mediator between fundamental and applied research. OWI is a non-profit organisation and an acknowledged institute affiliated to RWTH Aachen University.


Fuel cells in diesel operation –
System successfully tested

13th May 2015 – The research partners inhouse engineering, Enasys, MAHLE Behr GmbH & Co. KG and the Oel-Waerme-Institute (OWI) achieved an important milestone in the project completion for the development of a modular, diesel driven fuel cell system: The system’s functionality has been successfully demonstrated in the isolated operation of the fuel cell stack and of the electronics module. The fuel cell system consists of a diesel and water tank, a fuel gas generator module and a fuel cell module including a low-temperature-PEM-fuel cell (LT-PEM) with 90 cells, as well as a battery and power electronics. … More

Reducing costs, increasing lifetime

23rd March 2015 – Metallic components in oil burners and industrial furnaces, which come into contact with flames and hot exhaust gases, are exposed to high stresses due to heat and aggressive furnace atmospheres. Cost-effective, heat-resistant steels usually provide sufficient oxidation resistance and high-temperature strength up to a temperature of 900°C. Increasing requirements concerning the profitability of high-temperature processes in terms of lower energy costs and shorter process times often lead to higher process temperatures. For this reason, components of high-temperature processes often need to be produced out of highly temperature resistant, but also two to five times more expensive nickel alloys. … More

Micro-emulsions in middle distillate –
Study on the development of preventive measures

12th March 2015 – Biocomponents such as Fatty Acid Methyl Ester (FAME) or hydrogenated vegetable oils (HVO), are added to middle distillates like diesel and heating oil in Germany in order to increase the range of fossil fuels and to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions. Biocomponents contribute to the aging process of fuels, especially at long storage times. This can, among other things, lead to water-in-fuel-emulsions. Furthermore, by adding bio components, alkali- and alkaline earth metals, as well as phosphorus, get into the fuels.  … More

IGCS Workshop on Biodiesel in India –
IIT Madras and OWI conduct a joint Research Project

5th March 2015 – A workshop on “Promise and Challenges of Biodiesel as Sustainable Fuel for Future Use” took place at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) in Chennai, India, from 19 to 21 February 2015. More than 30 Indian and some German participants from academia and industry showed great interest in the fundamental and applied lectures which addressed issues of evaporation, combustion and autoxidation of biodiesel or challenges in production, material compatibility and sustainability. Optimizing the heating of industrial furnaces –
Flat flame burner for liquid fuels newly developed in a research project

26th November 2014 – The Zink KÖRNER GmbH and the OWI „Oel-Waerme“ Institute developed a concept for flat flame burners with power levels of 90 kW and 180 kW for the use of liquid fuels (middle distillates such as heating oil) within a joint research project. Flat flame burners for gaseous fuels are state of the art for the heating of industrial furnaces. Based on a series of experiments on a test bench, a burner quarl with new geometry was created, which stabilizes the twisted flames of both power levels flat and with complete burnout. … More
